Japan Has a Giant Godzilla You Can Play With
Kurihama Flower Park
is not safe! Actually, it is. The giant Godzilla that towers above the
play area doesn't breathe fire. Heck, it doesn't even move. But, the kaiju does have an unusual secret.
This nine meter tall, five ton Godzilla is actually playground equipment. The monster's tail doubles as a slide for children.
However, to enjoy this piece of playground equipment, children must climb stairs that lead directly into Godzilla's open crotch.
The horror!
Memories of that Pikachu bouncy house come rushing back.
The reason why there's a huge Godzilla at this park in Kanagawa is because in the first Godzilla film, the beast emerged out of the ocean at a nearby beach, known as Kanonzaki.
To
mark this, there was a Godzilla slide erected at the beach in 1958,
which probably inspired other, far less impressive Godzilla slides on
Japanese playgrounds throughout the country.
The slide
at Kanonzaki fell in to disrepair by the early 1970s. You can, however,
still see "Godzilla's footprint" at the shore.
A
new, far more impressive version of the slide (top photos) was built at
nearby Kurihama Flower Park in 1999. It still stands today.
Toho
Studios actually oversaw the slide's construction, meaning that Toho
signed off on the Godzilla crotch entry, making it official. That's
incredible.
It also means that giant Godzilla pre-dates the more recent "giant statue" trend.
Bigger is better. Yes, even if you have to crawl into a monster crotch.

For the last few years, it seems like Japan has been a tear to toss up giant mecha (robot) statues. There have been several life-sized Mobile Suit Gundam statues, as well as a one-to-one scale Gigantor and a full-scale Evangelion bust. But 2012 looks like it could be the year that Japan goes from giant machines to giant ladies.
Previously, Kotaku posted that a huge 60-foot replica of Neon Genesis Evangelion heroine Rei Ayanami is going up in Tokyo later this month. She won't be alone.
Like Rei Ayanami, One Piece's Princess Shirahoshi is coming to life in kiddy slide form.
Tokyo's Odaiba, home of the Giant Gundam, is now home to an enormous Mermaid Princess statue. In One Piece, the larger than life Princess Shirahoshi is described as being eight to ten times as big as hero Luffy. Here, she is nearly 50 feet tall (seated).
Japan's
Fuji TV regularly holds summer festivals in Tokyo's Odaiba. This year's
festival is "Shirahoshi Mermaid Park". It recently opened on July 14,
and it will run to September 2. Tickets are ¥1,500 (US$19) for general
admission and ¥1,300 ($16) for grade schoolers and junior high students.
Shirahoshi Mermaid Park has a variety of activities and attractions—as well as themed One Piece food. There are also t-shirts and limited edition figures (see the above gallery, courtesy of fan site TonyTonyChopper)

While Gundam is getting a full 1/1 full-scale replica, Neon Genesis Evangelion has to settled for a 1/1 scale burst. Better than nothing!
The statue recreates the scene in which Evangelion character Shinji Ikari meets Eva-01 for the first time.
Besides "Evangelion: World - Life-Size EVA-01 Construction Project", the attraction will also have the Evangelion race car on display as well.
In Japanese anime, they don't get much bigger than Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Starting this month, I mean that literally.
Between July 25 and August 26, an 18.5-meter (61-foot) version of the
Eva heroine will be erected along side a slide in Tokyo's Shiodome as
part of a summer event. Visitors can ride the slide free of charge.
