Are you a nerd? A geek? A straight male? Then, perhaps you might hit it off with some women in Japan. Over
a thousand people replied to a recent poll on a Japanese research site
on the appeal of otaku ("geeks"). A few years ago, when Train Man
was at the height of its popularity in Japan, dating geeks was
apparently a thing in Japan, because otaku were seen as diamonds in the
rough.
Though, several high profile crimes which centered around
otaku reverted the country's geek image back to its unfaltering default.
Still! Some women are keen to date nerds. There are even dating events
for women interested in meeting nerds for marriage partners.
There are single male geeks. There are female geeks. They'd probably
make good couples. But what about when a non-nerd chases after geeks?

A recent news program on TV Asahi's Super J Channel
detailed just that. In it, Kayo Tanaka, 31, said she was keen to get
married. All her friends have been getting married, and Tanaka, who
still lived with her parents, thought it was about time she did, too.
"I
like guys who don't believe in themselves," Tanaka said. While not a
geek herself, she said she's looking for a diamond in the rough. Make
that, a diamond in the otaku rough.
Japanese matchmaker I'm
Single holds "Otaku Marriage Hunting Parties" for those between the ages
of 20 and 39 years old. The male participates have full-time jobs at
companies or work for the government. The program also mentioned how
important money is for women when looking for a partner. Some otaku have
money! They'd need it to join this shindig. Dudes need to pony up
¥5,500 (US$66) to participate, while ladies need to shell out, ahem,
only ¥500 or $6.
Super J Channel showed the men and
women meet in a conference, sitting across from each other. After a bell
was rung, "appeal time" started. During this, they tried to woo or
impress their future mate in less than three minutes before switching
and moving on to the next prospective catch. Speed dating—for nerds.
After the "appeal time", the marriage hunters were given an hour of "free time" to chitchat with the ladies.
Remember, at this particular event, all the dudes were otaku. "I'm in
to video games, manga, and anime—I even cosplay," said one male 31
year-old participant.
So that doesn't mean they all the
participants spoke the same lingo, because, like Tanaka, not all the
females were geeks. Rather, some of them felt that otaku would make good
partners because they're so serious.
While Tanaka was talking
with a 36 year-old president of a game developer, he mentioned "FPS
games". And Tanaka had no clue what he meant. She also seemed miffed by Dynasty Warriors.
No
wonder when it came time to select and be selected, none of the otaku
picked her! Instead, all the men seemed very interested in a young lady
in red, who really loved anime.
Just because people are otaku, that doesn't mean they'll date or spend their time with whomever and haver zero standards. Rather, like with anyone, they want to be with people who share common interests and who speak their language.
"People
are going to think that person who wasn't popular with otaku," the
woman said as she left the event. That comment drew fire online with
people saying things like, "Who the hell does she think she is?" or "And
she wonders why she can't get married?"
Turns out nerds usually want to be with...nerds. (Or at least people who are nice and humble.)
According
to the poll, here are the ten most popular reasons why. Well, "nine"
technically as two were tied:
9. Geeks have their own particular likes and dislikes
9. They can understand female nerds
8. Since they know a lot of things, they're well-informed
7. They don't really lust after women
6. They're cute, because they're shy
5. They're diamonds in the rough
4. They're reliable and don't spend money on booze, gambling, or designer goods
3. They're not flirty and don't mess around
2. They know a lot about computers
1. They think deeply about things
Lots
of stereotypes in these qualities, but there you have it. And no word
about how this ranking plays out for members of the same sex!
In case you missed it, here are nine nerd belongings that make Japanese ladies freak out,
If you are a nerd, be proud. But also beware that some people in Japan
might not be totally cool with your otaku (geek) lifestyle—even fellow
geeks.

There are otaku belongings, let's call them lifestyle products, that make some recoil. Everyone has his or her own boundaries!
Japanese website Sugoren
ran a list of nine otaku items that females (even female nerds) were
supposedly not cool with. Even though this is a female list, I would
also imagine that finding these things in their girlfriend's or
boyfriend's room would likewise put off non-otaku men.
Not all
ladies (or men, for that matter) are bothered by these items. Some are.
Some aren't. However, let's have a look at what does cause a group of
them to pull away:
• Hug pillows with moé characters on them:
Well, yeah.
• Female cosplay costumes:
Even those polled that cosplayed weren't exactly thrilled about dudes
owning female cosplay outfits. The question becomes whom the costume is
for. Is it for girls? Is it for the man who owns it? So many questions.
• Moé anime posters:
Some don't like their significant other gazing up at anime characters.
• Idol badges:
The feeling is that if one has idol goods like badges pinned on their
shirt, then the idol is more important than their companion.
• Collectible female figures that show off panties:
As popular as this plastic fanservice is, some simply do not like girly
figurines and find them embarrassing, especially when they have people
visiting and have to hide the figurines before hand.
• Itasha:
Itasha are those anime decal covered cars. Some might not like the
looks from fellow motorists, and it might even be necessary to rent a
car if a weekend drive in your partner's moémobile bothers you so.
Other
things that go the no go were anime character key holders (oh come
one!), anime character wigs (who wears it?), and large amounts of plush
toys (they do collect dust).
Look, whomever you are with should
like you for whom you are. It doesn't matter if you are a geek or if
they are a geek, if they can't get past the small stuff, they won't able
to handle the big stuff, when times are tough or just plain geeky.
and here are nine ways Japanese women know you are a creepy otaku. These things seem to come in nines, huh.
Some of you are nerds. That's fine. Some of you are not. Likewise—fine.
But for the geeky male readers out there, not all members of the
opposite sex are going to be down with your peculiarities.
According to Japanese site Sugoren, here are nine ways that Japanese women can instantly spot "creepy" otaku. Sugoren
also collected comments and opinions from various females to draw up
its list. Below are some of the women's thoughts regarding this.
1. Wearing anime t-shirts or carrying anime goods
"I imagine that his entire room is covered with cute anime stuff..." said a 20-something female.
2. Perfectly mastering dance moves otaku do at idol concerts
"While singing an idol song with friends at karaoke, this one guy broke
into a perfect dance routine," said a teenage female. "It was scary."
3. Talking endless about how cute anime characters are
"The moment a guy starts talking about how cute an anime character is,"
said a 20-something female, "I can only think how creepy the guy is."
4. Referring to game characters as one's wife
"I recoil when I hear a guy referring to as an in-game character as 'my
wife,'" said a 20-something female. "Even if the guy's cool, forget
it."
5. Grinning ear-to-ear while reading a manga
"Guys that smile while reading cute sexy comics are the worst!" said a teenage female.
6. Talking like an anime character
"Not only is getting email that sounds like an anime character
frightening," said a 20-something female, "I get so annoyed that I don't
feel like replying."
7. Using creepy cute onomatopoeic words
"Even though this guy was a total hotty, he kept saying 'Nom Nom' while
chewing his food and any passionate feelings I had vanished," said a
teenage female.
8. Giving oneself an anime character name for a nickname
"This guy I was seeing wanted me to call him "Master" as if I were some
maid," said a teenage female. "I was repulsed by what he was saying."
9. Only singing anime songs at karaoke
"I was worried when he was singing his heart out at karaoke in falsetto to a female anime song," said a 20-something female.
So
if you are big old nerd, you might want to keep stuff like this to
yourself—or, you know, find someone who accepts you for you who are.
Crazy, I know!

Earlier this week, Yahoo Japan (via Otaku.com)
posted a poll that revealed how Japanese females thought they could
pick out unpopular guys. The take away? Apparently, if you are wearing
pretty much anything, you're so not cool.

Over three
hundred females participated in the poll, which was on fashion that
screams lame-o. Fifty-five percent admitted seeing a guy wearing
something and immediately thinking he wasn't popular because of it.

"Geeky
style" clothes were telltale signs and up there with dirty and
ill-fitting clothing in the undesirable department. Anime shirts,
backpacks, plaid shirts with jeans or even plaid shirts with backpacks
were among the nerdy clues that apparently gave away a guy's lack of
popularity.

Other
styles that didn't get high marks included hip-hop threads, certain
Japanese traditional designs, "childish clothing", old man clothing,
sweats, or tucked-in shirts outside of business hours.

If you are interested in women, guess that leaves wearing whatever is in the latest fashion magazine the day it hits newsstands. That, or searching for the 45 percent who apparently have never judged people on their fashion!
